- ➤ Calvary Commission will host its 48th annual Breakthrough Missions and Prayer Conference from Aug. 27 to 31 — starting with a free service at Church of Living Hope in Tyler at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 and sessions on its Lindale campus from Aug. 28 to 30 — with worship, mission reports and ministry training under the theme Rooted in Faith. The commission will also host a Labor Day Blast on Sept. 1 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the campus — charging $15 per person — with games, barbecue, prizes and activities for all ages. Tyler Morning Telegraph
- ➤ Phil Latham, a longtime journalist who published the Marshall News Messenger, died on Aug.15 at 70 and was praised for his fair and honest reporting—community leaders said his work helped shape local journalism. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept.6 at First Christian Church of Tyler and his family asks for random acts of kindness in his honor. Tyler Morning Telegraph
- ➤ SPCA of East Texas is hosting an adoptable pet event today through August 31 at its center at 3245 W. Grande Blvd in Tyler. Featured pets include Mort—a cuddly domestic shorthair mix who loves attention—and others like Hello Kitty, Tater, TrendingPaco, and Radar, each offering unique traits for loving families. - ➤ Tyler gardeners are set to see a second spring as bright red oxblood lilies bloom after a late summer rain; the Smith County Master Gardeners will hold an online bulb sale from October 13 to 22 and a guest lecture on October 25 at Pollard United Methodist Church—Greg Grant will speak. - ➤ Caladiums are a top plant for dark garden spots that need bright filtered light, and Smith County Master Gardners explain that they come in many varieties such as White Christmas and Candidum. Gardeners are advised to plant the bulbs 1.5 to 2 inches deep after Mother’s Day and water well so the plants grow vigorously until they become leggy by late September—indicating it’s time to dig up and store the bulbs for next spring.
