COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, volunteers gathered at the Tyler Public Library to offer water, supplies, and a cooling space as temperatures hit triple digits — a record high that stressed the need for support among the unhoused. The Tyler Street Team works weekly to provide crucial relief and help residents escape the heat.  CBS19

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A major crash involving an 18-wheeler occurred on I-20 and a cyclist was injured in a hit-and-run crash on Hwy. 271—police are investigating both incidents.  CBS19

CRIME NEWS

  • Timothy C. Thompson was arrested for hosting a cockfight on July 4 and charged with organized criminal activity, with animal welfare groups reporting the event drew 200 to 250 people (with about 500 fighting birds) while urging tougher laws (such as the proposed FIGHT Act co-sponsored by Rep.   • A man accused of killing his girlfriend and setting a house on fire is set for a pre-trial in September.  CBS19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 1st, the City of Tyler updated pavement markings and traffic flow on West Houston Street, Fair Park Drive, Rieck Road, and Shiloh Road as part of the 2025 Asphalt Enhancement Project to improve safety—changes include adding a center two-way left-turn lane and buffered bike lanes on West Houston Street and Fair Park Drive, installing a continuous left-turn lane on Rieck Road, and removing a right-turn-only lane at Shiloh Road.  Tyler Morning Telegraph

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rachel Fox, BSN, RN, Director of Health Services at Tyler ISD, was awarded the 2025 W.T. 'Doc' Ballard Award for Excellence in Public Health by NET Health on August 1 for her role supporting 18,700 students and 2,700 staff. She has led important programs and expanded services—such as Care Closets and CPR training—to improve school health and safety.  Tyler Morning Telegraph
