- ➤ 8-year-old Jalissa'd Sims will represent East Texas in the Junior Miss Juneteenth state finals in Texas City (set for Saturday) and hopes to honor the legacy of Juneteenth. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ David Emerson, CEO of the East Texas Food Bank, said that the Big Beautiful Bill Act signed on July 4 may cause thousands to lose SNAP benefits and force the food bank and its partner agencies in 26 counties to serve fewer food options. He explained that the law restricts future benefit increases, imposes new work requirements, and is expected to add $716 million in food benefits and $89.5 million in administrative costs starting in 2028 (food pantries have already seen higher demand since the pandemic).
