Good morning, Tyler. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 5th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Longtime Tyler pastor David Dykes, 72, died this week and was remembered for his passion and dedication to teaching God's word—he served 30 years at Green Acres Baptist Church and retired in 2021, continuing as pastor emeritus. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church’s Worship Center at 1607 Troup Hwy.  Longview News-Journal
  • Local Girl Scouts from Tyler and Bullard have volunteered for three years at O’Malley Alley Cat Rescue where they craft cat scratchers from recycled cookie boxes, clean facilities, sell items at events, and help foster about 150 cats. The troop, led by Stephanie Allen, also holds kitty story time and joins other projects that bring fresh ideas and energy to support the rescue’s care—ongoing efforts that continue to make a difference.  Tyler Morning Telegraph

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tyler Junior College programs have helped adult learners find new opportunities by offering degrees that lead to further study in fields like healthcare and HVAC. Graduates—such as Lindale resident Ronda Knight, who earned degrees in psychology and sociology—are balancing work, family and education while preparing for future careers.  Tyler Morning Telegraph

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tyler Neighborhood Services picked 2,000 people for its Housing Choice Voucher Program by lottery from the waiting list that re-opened from June 24 to June 26. The program helps low-income families, older adults and people with disabilities find safe, decent housing in the private market — and participants can check their status online.  Tyler Morning Telegraph

HEALTH NEWS

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas and Christus Health extended their contract until Aug. 1 to keep patients in network while they work on a long-term deal.
