Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 2nd of June.
Good morning, Tyler.
The SPCA of East Texas in Tyler is hosting an adoption event from today until June 8 at its center (3245 W.
Grande Blvd.) where pets like Rex, a 4-year-old German Shepherd mix, Koda, a 1.5-year-old Labrador mix, Finley, a lively Jack Russell mix, Spriggins, a gentle cat, and Lilly, an affectionate mix, are waiting for new homes.
Rep. Talarico said today that the new $8.5 billion public school funding bill leaves most schools underfunded by offering only a slight boost to per-student funding and selective teacher raises.
He also argued that the plan to require the display of the Ten Commandments in classrooms is unconstitutional—warning that it favors one religion over others.
At a town hall on Friday evening at Tyler Junior College's Jean Browne Theater, US Rep. Moran called for making the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent to avoid a 24% tax rise next year—he stressed that letting the law expire would hurt local jobs and small businesses.
He also detailed parts of the One Big Beautiful Bill—an extensive 1,100-page package that would extend tax cuts and add measures for border security and energy to support the local economy.
UT Tyler Patriots baseball lost 1-4 to the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks in the Division II Championship Finals, marking their first appearance in the world series as a Division II team—previously, they won a title as a DIII squad.
