  • Jim Connally—known as Mr. Camp Tyler—passed away in March and was honored on May 10 at Camp Tyler; he spent decades improving outdoor education in our community and was remembered for his heroic rescue efforts in 1970.  Tyler Morning Telegraph

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was arrested after a video showed him stab and beat an East Texas mother, authorities said — the investigation continues.  CBS19
  • The trial for 41-year-old Lance Phillips—son of a Smith County official—began yesterday in Tyler when he was accused of assaulting an officer as Lt. Matt Lazarine was injured during an April 2 commissioners court meeting; Phillips pleaded not guilty.  Tyler Morning Telegraph

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colm Conneen, a UT Tyler graduate, was named a U.S. Fulbright fellow and will start a one-year research program in Switzerland this fall. He will study tiny life in pitcher plants — work that builds on his science and math skills — as he looks to earn a doctorate.  Tyler Morning Telegraph

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Smith County Commissioners approved a new victim notification system—switching from VINELink to Sylogist software that connects with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice—and renewed the county’s tax abatement policy through 2027. They also accepted a $35,110.62 FEMA grant for culvert repairs on County Road 498, approved funding for a drone to aid emergency planning, authorized overtime for the Road & Bridge Department, and completed a paving project on County Road 3344 under budget using ARPA funds, saving $221,486.72.  Tyler Morning Telegraph

  • Investors looking at Tyler real estate see steady numbers as multi-family units average 87.6% occupancy and industrial, office, and retail properties have low vacancies (below the national average).
