- ➤ On March 15, a group of twelve volunteers from the Tyler Audubon Society and East Texas Master Naturalists restored Langley Island on Lake Tyler by clearing debris and trimming brush — they installed signage to guide boaters and kayakers. - ➤ Officials conducted a preliminary investigation into a Monday night house fire at a South Bay Drive home in Emerald Bay, Bullard, where firefighters arrived at 7:15 p.m. and contained the blaze by 8:45 p.m. — investigators say it began in the garage near a charging golf cart — with both residents escaping without injury. - ➤ Several Tyler businesses changed in March while more will open soon—Bass Pro Shops will celebrate an Evening for Conservation event on April 16 before opening its new store on April 17, and a Chick-fil-A near Earl Campbell Parkway and Loop 323 will finish construction soon. Tyler Indoor Pickleball plans a soft opening between April 25 and 30 before fully launching on May 1—meanwhile, The Understudy comedy venue, Grandy’s, and Flor de Taxco #2 have closed and local entrepreneurs have acquired the historic Treehouse building for new ventures. - ➤ The trial for a Smith County business owner accused of killing a 19-year-old on the Fourth of July last year began Tuesday morning — Seferino Bautista-Renteria faces charges including murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, tampering with or fabricating evidence and deadly conduct by discharge of a firearm after the teen was fatally shot in the back of the head while making a U-turn behind Bautista Auto Sales on US Highway 271. - ➤ Texas College President Dwight Fennell, who has run the college since 2008, will retire on June 30, 2026. He maintained a balanced budget for 17 years and grew the endowment from under $1 million to over $10 million (completing $19 million in campus work) while strengthening academic programs.
